Cyclones Walk Off Kansas in Game One

AMES, Iowa – Kasey Simpson's sac fly in the bottom of the seventh lifted Iowa State (26-25, 5-11 Big 12) over Kansas (15-32, 2-14 Big 12) in walk-off fashion, 8-7, Friday evening at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones overcame an early 7-1 deficit to win their fourth-straight game.
Simpson's walk off was set up by a lead-off double from Milaysia Ochoa who advanced to third on an Alesia Ranches groundout. Simpson then fouled off a pair of pitches in a full count before lifting a ball into shallow center field to plate the winning run. The Jayhawk center fielder made a good throw home, but a sliding Ochoa just beat the tag and was confirmed safe upon review.
Ochoa doubled twice and was the lone Cyclone with a multi-hit performance. Simpson, Kali Gose and Skyler Ramos all logged two RBIs in the win.
Saya Swain got the starting nod for ISU in the circle, but it was Ellie Spelhaug (10-16) that went down as the pitcher of record. Spelhaug tossed three scoreless innings to finish the game and allowed only two hits in the outing.
A pair of walks came back to hurt the Cyclones in the second inning as a three-run home run got Kansas on the board first. An ISU error and a Jayhawk base hit allowed two more runs to score in the frame.
Gose would get a run back in the bottom half of the second, but a two-run home run for Kansas stretched its lead to 7-1 the next inning. A six-run Cyclone third inning tied the game, highlighted by singles from Angelina Allen, Simpson and Ramos and a double by Ochoa.
Iowa State pieced together a threat in the sixth inning but left a runner stranded in scoring position. The Cyclones would break through the next inning on Simpson's walk-off sac fly.
Up Next
Iowa State and Kansas square off in game two of the series Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will serve as ISU's cancer awareness game.
