LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Iowa State volleyball team (0-1) lost the season opener to No. 18 Creighton (1-0) 25-21, 25-20, 25-22 in the opening match of the Rumble in the Rockies tournament. Freshman Maya Duckworth highlighted the match in her first career outing as a Cyclone, finishing with 12 kills on .310 hitting and serving up an ace.
Duckworth and senior Eleanor Holthaus both hit in double-digit kills on the morning as Holthaus finalized 11. Jaden Newsome surpassed 300 career digs, ending the match with a team-leading 12 digs to bring her career total to 310.
Creighton out-hit Iowa State .276 to .220 on the match and totaled 50 kills compared to Iowa State's 34. The Cyclones kept the match close as the game saw four lead changes and seven tied scores throughout.
SET ONE
The Cyclones got behind by as many as five at a score of 10-5 before a Maya Duckworth ace fired up Iowa State. ISU then kept Creighton's lead within three points and tied it up at 14-14 with a Creighton attack error. Eleanor Holthaus tallied her fourth kill of the set at a hitting percentage of .667 to force a Creighton timeout at a score of 23-20 in Creighton's favor. A block by Kelsey Perry and Jaden Newsome then sent Iowa State out to a scoring run of 3-0, but Creighton pulled ahead to take the first set 25-21.
SET TWO
The Cyclones jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two kills by Mariah Mitchell, an ace by Brooke Stonestreet and a block by Alexis Engelbrecht and Mariah Mitchell. The battle kept within three points leading to Creighton tying it up at 10s, 11s and 13s. Three-straight kills by Creighton's Norah Sis brought Creighton ahead at 15-13. Iowa State kept within four or less until a kill by Creighton's Kiana Schmitt sealed the second for Creighton at 25-20.
SET THREE
Four kills at a perfect hitting percent got Creighton out to a 6-1 lead in the third. Duckworth continued her dominance, registering her first career game in double figures. Iowa State kept up the fight, coming back within two with a solo block by Jordan Hopp to bring the score to 19-17 and give the Cyclones some momentum. Holthaus followed that up with joining Duckworth in double figures, hitting her 10th kill of the match and bringing the Cyclones within one as Creighton led 22-21. Creighton ultimately swept the match with a third set score of 25-22.

The Cyclones return tonight at 8 p.m. CT to meet Wyoming. The match will be streamed by the Mountain West Network. Iowa State wraps up the Rumble in the Rockies with a match against Wichita State tomorrow at 2 p.m.
