BATON ROUGE, La. – Iowa State (2-4) won a thriller over Troy (2-4) 21-25, 23-25, 25-11, 25-19, 15-13. Eleanor Holthaus had a career day, notching the highest amount of kills in her career.
Holthaus tallied 25 kills on 53 attempts at .377. The total is three short of making the all-time list of the top-10 most kills in a single game in program history. The last time a Cyclone hit over 20 kills happened on Sept. 10, 2021 also by Holthaus when she hit 22 against Syracuse.
Kiersten Schmitt set a career high for the young freshman as she notched 10 kills in the match.
Five different Cyclones stepped to the service line to deliver eight aces, including the game winner.
Iowa State blockers also got in on the action as they came .5 total blocks from tying the 10th-highest single game total with 19. Eight Cyclones contributed to the total as Kelsey Perry (1 solo, 7 assists) and Alexis Engelbrecht (8 assists) led the stats.
SET ONE
Troy got out to a 7-2 scoring run before a Holthaus kill and ace brought the Cyclones within three. Iowa State attack errors built Troy's lead back up by six. Back-to-back Iowa State blocks then gave some momentum to the Cyclones as setter Jaden Newsome sent her second kill of the match over to make it 15-12 in favor of Troy. Another kill by Schmitt caused Troy to call a timeout. Following the timeout, Schmitt slammed down a kill once again to trim Troy's lead to two. The set kept close while Iowa State fought off a Troy set point on a Holthaus kill. Troy then ended the set with a Julia Brooks kill. Iowa State led the set in kills, but recorded 10 attacking errors.
SET TWO
The fourth and fifth kill of the match for Schmitt brought in the first two Cyclone points of the frame. A 4-0 Troy scoring run brought on an Iowa State timeout. Iowa State came within a point on a Kate Shannon ace as she was the third Cyclone to serve one up. The next Cyclone ace was again by Shannon as the serve took the score to 21-18 in Troy's favor. Troy again made it to set point at 24-20 before Iowa State fought it off to make the score 24-23. The second set ended with Troy taking the advantage, 25-23.
SET THREE
Iowa State took the first four points before a Cyclone service error ended the scoring run. ISU was able to keep their lead and build it up to eight. Holthaus continued her hitting efficiency, dialing in her fifth game of the season with double-digit kills as the Cyclones kept control of the set. Iowa State hit .476 to Troy's -.167 to storm back and win the set 25-11.
SET FOUR
The battle proved steady early in the frame as no team built a comfortable lead. As Troy tied it up 7-7, Holthaus sent her 17th kill over to halt a Troy scoring run. The lead stuck to Iowa State's side throughout while Shannon tallied her third ace of the match to tie her career high as the score was brought to 21-17. The match was sent to a fifth as the Cyclones won the frame 25-19. ISU again hit over .300 while Troy hit under .100.
SET FIVE
Troy took the first three points before a Holthaus tip kill tied it up as she tallied over 20 kills. The Cyclones lead remained before Troy tied things up at 12. Consistent action continued before Brooke Stonestreet ace ended the match with an Iowa State win, 15-13.
