No. 22 Cyclones Fall At No. 15 Auburn, 5-2

AUBURN, Ala. – No. 22 Iowa State fell to No. 15 Auburn, 5-2, in its first road match of the season Friday at Yarbrough Tennis Center. The Cyclones fall to 2-1 this season, while Auburn improves to 1-0.
The Tigers got off to a hot start, earning the doubles point quickly. No. 17 Ange Oby Kajuru and Chie Kezuka were defeated by No. 10 Ariana Arseneault and Carolyn Ansari, 6-1, falling to 0-2 against ranked opponents this season.
Miska Kadleckova and Sofia Cabezas played their opponents closer, however they would eventually lose the match, 6-3, against DJ Bennett and Kaitlyn Carnicella. Thasaporn Naklo and Anna Supapitch Kuearum's doubles match was unfinished, trailing 5-4 against Adeline Flach and Angella Okutoyi.
In singles, Iowa State struggled to gain momentum early, however Kajuru was the highlight for head coach Boomer Saia and the team. The sophomore from Tokyo, Japan was the second match to finish, taking down No. 71 Ansari in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. It marked Kajuru's fifth consecutive singles win and third win over a ranked singles player this season. The sophomore has 16 career wins at the No. 2 singles spot, four away from entering the programs top five all-time.
At the No. 4 spot, junior Kadleckova was also able to pull out a victory against Auburn's Carnicella. In a match that went down to the wire, Kadleckova was able to pull it out, 6-4, 6-7(9), 1-0(7). This is also Kadleckova's fifth-straight singles victory.
Iowa State is on the road again for the ITA Kickoff in Miami, Florida next weekend. The Cyclones will go head-to-head with No. 16 UCLA on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 2:00 PM CT.
