AMES, Iowa – Iowa State put up four top-10 all-time Iowa State performances and seven event victories in the second and final day of the ISU Holiday Invite. Makayla Clark dominated the day setting the 1,000-meter run school record.
Clark had an elite start to her sophomore campaign, taking down the 1,000m run program record that stood for 33 years. Clark timed in at 2:44.97 to break Edith Nakiyingi's 1991 record of 2:45.32.
Kole Becker began day two of the heptathlon finishing third in the 60m hurdles with 8.38 to add 888 points to his total and remain in the top position of the overall standings. Becker then solidified third in the pole vault, clearing 13-9 2/4 (4.20m). Becker closed the final event, the 1,000m, with the win of 2:43.99 to officially take hold of the heptathlon title. Totaling 5,451 points, Becker jumped up the ISU all-time ranks to set the third-best performance. It was the Lisbon, Iowa's first time completing the heptathlon.
Jack Latham and Alec Carr both made improvements to the ISU all-time performance list in 60m hurdles. Latham posted the top times in both prelims and the final, winning the final in 7.95 to improve his time at No. 8 in Iowa State history. Fellow sophomore Alec Carr finished right behind Latham in 8.01 to notch the 10th-best ISU performance.
Iowa State took the titles in both the men's and women's 300m. Gus Langford timed in at 34.30 for the men while Bria Barnes won in 39.50.
The Cyclones also swept the high jump as Kailynn Gubbels took first clearing 5-3 (1.60m) and Braden Goellner, in his first outing as a Cyclone, took the win with 7-0 1/4 (2.14m). Goellner's clearance came 3/4 of an inch off the 10th-best performance in school history.
Ella O'Neall was the top finisher for ISU in the women's shot put, taking second with 47-3 1/2 (14.41m). Betty Rosvold placed right behind O'Neall with a mark of 47-3 1/2 (14.41m). Both recorded personal bests with their finishes.
In the men's shot put, Blake Veenstra took second with 55-4 3/4 (16.88m) and freshman Brandon Fischer (unattached) took third with a mark of 53-1 3/4 (16.20m).
In the men's mile Said Mechaal, running unattached, won in 4:01.77 while Seth Clevenger posted a collegiate best of 4:09.15 for second. Emanuel Galdino came in fourth with 4:14.90.
Darius Kipyego time in under 1:50 with an 800m time of 1:48.67 for second to begin his junior season. Peter Smith also notched a second-place finish in the 1,000m run clocking 2:25.50.
Iowa State will be back in action in 2024 with the Hawkeye Invitational Jan. 13.
