AMES, Iowa – Iowa State associate athletics director for sports medicine Mark Coberley has been named to the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Hall of Fame, as announced Monday by the association.
"Mark has positively impacted the lives of so many student-athletes and coaches through his leadership of our sports medicine program," Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said. "He leads with the utmost class and professionalism. Being selected for any organization's Hall of Fame represents a pinnacle moment in one's career. This is a well-deserved and also well-earned honor for Mark. We are both excited for, and proud of, Mark for being selected for induction into the National Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame."
The New London, Iowa, native graduated from Iowa State in 1987, learning under another NATA Hall of Famer Frank Randall. He earned his master's degree from the University of Arizona in 1990 before returning to Iowa State in 1993. Coberley, who is one of six 2023 inductees into the hall of fame, was promoted to leader of ISU's sports medicine department in 1998.
Coberley was a member of the NATA Board of Directors from 2015-20 and played an instrumental role in guiding the Cyclone Athletics program during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He was honored as the Iowa State University Athletics Department Employee of the Year in 2020 and in 2021 received the university's COVID-19 Exemplary Operational Support Award.
Coberley was inducted into the Iowa Athletic Trainers' Society Hall of Honor in 2014 and the Mid-America Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame in 2019 and now he adds the national organization to the list.
"Being inducted into the 2023 NATA Hall of Fame class is a great honor and truly humbling," Coberley said. "It speaks volumes to the great support we get from the ISU athletics administration, the really talented people we have had in our organization and the services we are able to provide to help advance athlete health care that resulted in this recognition.
"The NATA Hall of Fame includes people who have led advancements and change in sports medicine and athletic training. Iowa State University has a significant presence in this group. I believe I will be the ninth person who is either an alum or has worked at Iowa State to be named to the NATA Hall of Fame, and am really fortunate to be a part of this tremendous program and university."
Coberley will be inducted to the NATA Hall of Fame at the NATA Clinical Symposia and AT Expo, June 21-14 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
