Wrestling Primer: ISU Travels to UNI, Hosts Illinois

AMES, Iowa - No. 3 Iowa State kicks off a stretch of three duals in six days, all against top 20 opponents, with an in-state matchup Friday at No. 14 Northern Iowa. The Cyclones return home Sunday for a dual against No. 20 Illinois as part of Iowa State's first Beauty and the Beast event since 2017.

IN-STATE RIVALRY CONTINUES
Friday night will be the 81st time Iowa State and Northern Iowa meet on the wrestling mat.

Iowa State has won three in a row against the Panthers but the teams have split the last six meetings, with the last three being decided by six points or less. Last year's dual was a classic, with the Cyclones winning the final two matches to win, 16-15.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST RETURNS
Beauty and the Beast returns to Hilton Coliseum for the first time since 2017. Iowa State wrestling will compete side-by-side with Cyclone gymnastics Sunday afternoon.

Iowa State is back to No. 3 in the NWCA Coaches Poll, marking 14 consecutive weeks ranked inside the top 10, including eight inside the top five.
Iowa State hasn't lost a Big 12 dual in over two calendar years. The Cyclones have won 17 consecutive league duals, with the last loss coming against Oklahoma State (1/30/21). The Cyclones have won 27 of their last 29 duals overall dating back to last season, with the lone losses coming to No. 1 Penn State and No. 2 Iowa.
ISU has four wins against top 15 opponents this season (#12 Wisconsin, #12 Cornell, #3 Arizona State, #10 Oklahoma State). Ten of Iowa State's dual opponents this season are ranked in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll, including six inside the top 15 and three in the top five.
David Carr has won 23 consecutive matches since his loss in the second round of the NCAA tournament last year. Per Fanco Wrestling, Carr's winning streak is tied for the fifth-longest active streak in Division I.
Eight of Carr's 17 wins this season have come with bonus points, including four of his last seven. Carr has 59 takedowns to his name this season and has only allowed two.
Yonger Bastida leads the team with 63 takedowns this season.
Marcus Coleman enters the weekend with 90 career victories. With only three duals remaining in the season, the senior will need to stack wins in the Big 12 and NCAA Championships to become the 39th 100-match winner in ISU history.
