KANSAS CITY, Missouri – No. 3 Kansas (27-6, 13-5 Big 12) held off Iowa State (19-13, 9-9 Big 12), 71-58 in a hard-fought semifinal game at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship Friday night at the T-Mobile Center.
Iowa State crawled back from an eight-point halftime deficit to take its first lead of the game early in the second half, but the Jayhawks answered with key run to hold off the Cyclones and advance to the title game tomorrow night.
Jaren Holmes led the Cyclones with 16 points behind a trio of 3-pointers and Robert Jones chipped in with 11 points. Holmes averaged 16.5 points in his two Big 12 Tournament games. Osun Osunniyi posted eight points and five boards.
True freshman Tamin Lipsey picked up three steals in the contest to give him 70 on the year, just one shy from the Cyclone rookie record. He also recorded three dimes to push his season total to 145, the third-best total by a Cyclone freshman.
KU made 52 percent of its shots from the field, but the Cyclones outboarded the Jayhawks, 33-28.
How It Happened
Kansas opened up an early 19-12 lead behind Wilson, who scored 13 of KU's first 19 points. The Cyclones recovered with Gabe Kalscheur chipping in with multiple buckets to close the gap to 22-18.
The Jayhawks led 27-18 with seven minutes remaining in the opening period, but Kalscheur's second trey gave the Cyclones five-straight points to cut the lead to 27-23.
The Jayhawks went into the break up 33-25 behind Wilson's 15 points and 54 percent shooting. The Cyclones had 12 first-half turnovers, but outrebounded KU, 18-12.
Seven-straight points for the Cyclones to open the second half cut the KU lead to 33-32. Jones had a conventional three-point play and Holmes buried a 3-pointer at the top of the key to ignite the Cyclone faithful in the T-Mobile Center.
Demarion Watson's two free-throws with 14:21 left in the game gave the Cyclones their first and only lead of the game at 39-38.
KU promptly rattled off a 10-2 run to regain control of the game at 48-41 with under 11 minutes left. The Cyclones never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Top Performance
Robert Jones' energy was felt throughout the game, battling for loose balls and grabbing rebounds. Jones had 11 points, making 4-of-6 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. four of his five rebounds were on the offensive glass.

Iowa State will wait for Sunday's NCAA Selection Show to find out the site and opponent in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
