AZUSA, Calif. – Janette Schraft took down the 3,000m-steeplechase school record Thursday night to highlight action as the Cyclones began the Bryan Clay Invitational, Mt. SAC Relays and Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.
Schraft became the first in Iowa State history to break 10 minutes in the 3,000m steeplechase, smashing the school record of 10:03.78 set in 2019 with 9:57.55. The junior finished 10th as she ran through the rain in the invitational heat at the Bryan Clay Invitational. This is the second time this season Schraft has handed in a PR as she previously set a best time of 10:07.70, the then-ranking third fastest in school history.
In the 10,000-meter, Cailie Logue clocked 32:33.63 to finish fourth. Logue was one of seven runners to break the previous facility record. Dana Feyen raced to 33:14.55 for 11th, cutting over 20 seconds off her previous best to improve her time at No. 10 on the all-time performance list. Brenna Cohoon competed in the 10K at the Mt. SAC Relays, also running to a PR of 34:26.64, a 35-second improvement.
At the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Kaitlyn Burson had an impressive hammer throw outing, jumping right up the all-time ranks to the third-best performance in Iowa State history with 201-3 (61.35m) for an Iowa State PR. The junior in her first semester at Iowa State hit the mark with her first throw to finish fourth while coming just two inches off her lifetime best.
Emily March was the top-collegiate finisher in the discus and fifth overall with 185-4 (56.49m) to nearly hit her season best.
Multi-event athletes began competition at the Bryan Clay Invitational. The heptathlon started with Kiersten Fisher and Sydney Willits both breaking their 100m hurdle personal records. Fisher broke hers by .14 seconds with 14.26 for third while Willits trimmed .13 seconds off her best time with 14.55 for fifth.
Willits ended the first day of the heptathlon with big personal best time drop to win the 200m in 24.58, shaving .40 seconds off to lower her PR for the second-consecutive competition. The time is just .06 seconds off the 10th-fastest in program history. Willits moved into third place in the overall standings with the finish, totaling 3,115 points after four events. Kiersten Fisher finishes day one in seventh (2,916) and Kailynn Gubbels (2,815) in 15th.
Thai Thompson kicked off the decathlon downing his 100m dash PR set in 2021 with a time of 10.87 for third. Thompson took down another two-year-old PR in the final event of the day, the 400m dash, with a time of 48.56. The junior entered the final event in sixth and moved into fourth with the victory with 3,789 points.
