LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 11 Iowa State defeated West Virginia, 4-0, Tuesday afternoon in its regular season finale at the University of Kansas. It marked the Cyclones' seventh sweep of the season.
The Cyclones head into the postseason at 17-4 overall and with a 7-2 mark in Big 12 play. It is the first winning season in conference play in school history. The 17 wins are the most by ISU since 1986-87. WVU drops to 11-11 overall and 1-8 in conference action.
ISU will be seeded third at the Big 12 Championships that start Thursday. The Cyclones earned a first-round bye and will face host Kansas, the sixth-seed, Friday at noon.
The Cyclones earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, improving to 16-0 this season when capturing the point.
No. 52 Thasaporn Naklo and Anna Supapitch Kuearum got things started with an impressive 6-0 win over the WVU duo of Camilla Bossi and Ting-Pei Chang. No. 64 Ange Oby Kajuru and Xinyi Nong improved to 11-2 this season and won their fifth straight with a 7-5 victory over Michaela Kucharova and Momoko Nagato.
Miska Kadleckova moved to 16-3 in dual play this season by disposing of Kucharova, 6-1, 6-0, to put the Cyclones on top 2-0.
On the second court, Kajuru beat Chang by the same 6-1, 6-0 score as Kadleckova and moved the Cyclones within a point of the clinch.
ISU wouldn't have to wait long for the clincher as No. 67 Naklo won 6-0, 6-3 against Bossi to record her 140th career win, which ranks fifth all-time at ISU. It was also her 73rd career singles victory, moving her into a tie for fifth in school history, and her 13th career conference singles win, finishing her career tied for fourth-most conference wins in program history.
