Cyclones, Hilton Magic Take Down No. 7 Kansas, 79-75

AMES, Iowa – Keshon Gilbert scored seven points in the final three minutes and Tre King netted 21 as No. 23 Iowa State (16-4, 5-2 Big 12) defeated No. 7 Kansas (16-4, 4-3 Big 12), 79-75 Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.
Gilbert joined the long list of Hilton Magic in this nail-biter. The Cyclones saw a 12-point second-half lead diminish to two (74-72) with less than a minute remaining. But with the shot clock winding down on ISU's next possession, Gilbert drilled a deep trey to seal ISU's eighth win over a Top-10 team in the last two seasons. He finished the game with 16 points.
King was also outstanding. The senior post drilled a career-high four 3-pointers for his first 20-point outing against a Big 12 team. King's four triples was key, as the Cyclones made 14-of-30 behind the arc compared to Kansas' 7-of-20 effort.
Curtis Jones had 13 of his 15 points in the second half, including all three of his 3-pointers.
Hunter Dickinson led the Jayhawks with 20 points and 15 boards.
How It Happened
The first half was pretty much all defense. Both teams struggled to score against contested, difficult shots. The Jayhawks led 14-9 until King and Gilbert scored back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Cyclones the lead at 16-14.

The lead changed multiple times in the first half. With KU clinging to a one-point lead with under a minute left, Tamin Lipsey was fouled by Parker Braun on a fastbreak drive. It was deemed a flagrant and KU head coach Bill Self received a technical foul after protesting the call.
Lipsey made just 2-of-4 free-throws, but the Cyclones kept possession and Milan Momcilovic buried a 3-pointer to give the Cyclones a 30-26 lead at the break. Both teams shot under 40 percent in the opening period.

The pace picked up after intermission. KU scored the first four points of the second half, but the Cyclones rallied with a 16-5 run to move ahead 46-35. Lipsey, Momcilovic and King all hit 3-pointers in the flurry.

Curtis Jones kept the Jayhawks at distance by making a trio of 3-pointers in a four-minute span, as the Cyclones led 58-46 with just over 10 minutes remaining.
The Jayhawks crept closer at 62-56 with 6:23 left, primarily at the free-throw line where they reached the bonus at the midway point of the second half. It was soon a 67-63 ISU lead after Johnny Furphy scored five-straight points for KU with under five minutes remaining.
Gilbert then came up big with two-straight buckets, one on a nifty drive in the half court and the other on a fast break lay-in after a Hason Ward blocked shot, and suddenly ISU was back up 74-65 with 2:25 left.
But Dickinson and McCullar hit back-to-back 3-pointers, followed by a K.J. Adams free-throw, and the Cyclone lead was cut to 74-72 with 1:10 remaining before Gilbert's big shot.
Key Performer
Tamin Lipsey hit two treys and scored 10 points for the Cyclones. He also dished out a team-high eight assists and recorded a steal. Lipsey extended his school record streak of consecutive games with a steal to 32, the second-longest active string in the nation.
