AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (8-6, 2-1 Big 12) suffered its first Big 12 loss at Kansas State (4-9, 2-2 Big 12) Saturday by set scores of 30-28, 25-23, 26-28, 17-25, 10-15.
In a match with 27 ties and 16 lead changes, Iowa State went up 2-0 to start but fell in the next three as KSU took the win. Iowa State hit over .270 in the first two sets but was outhit in the following sets while the Cyclones tallied 16 service errors compared to KSU's eight through the match. It was Iowa State's seventh five setter of the season.
Maya Duckworth led the match with a career-high 23 kills, totaling 19 following three sets. Duckworth had match No. 7 in a row with double figure kills and the second 20 kill match of her career. The junior did it all, also adding nine digs and five blocks.
Pam McCune was a force at the net once again, totaling 10 blocks with two solo and eight block assists. Earlier this season vs. Illinois, McCune became the first Cyclone to have a 10-block match in five years.
Brooke Stonestreet extended her streak to five matches with 25 or more digs as she totaled a match-leading 25. Stonestreet also had eight assists.
The versatile Morgan Brandt went out to her second straight double-double of 43 assists and 11 digs, her sixth of the season and 22nd of her career. The setter added four kills and a block. Kiersten Schmitt led the match with a career-high four aces.
SET ONE
KSU took the first two points, but ISU pushed forward to 10-6 lead to start. As K-State inched back toward the lead, Duckworth laid down her third kill as ISU continued to hit at a hitting percentage of nearly .400. The kill sparked a 4-1 run as ISU led 15-10 at the media timeout. The Cyclones then reached 20 as the Wildcats held 15 after Amiree Hendricks-Walker found the floor. Duckworth brought ISU to set point (24-20) after two straight kills, but after an unsuccessful ISU challenge the set continued. KSU came back to extend it while the set saw eight set points. Following a gritty rally, McCune and Duckworth teamed up for the block to end the set at 30-28 in favor of ISU.
SET TWO
McCune put up a solo to give ISU the 5-4 lead and total her fifth block. The Wildcats went on to grab the advantage at 10-9, but Iowa State took it right back as Duckworth entered double figures. Another lead change came after a K-State run of four, bringing the second frame to the media timeout at 15-13. Nayeli Gonzalez halted the run out of the timeout with her fifth kill and a Rachel Van Gorp ace brought the set to a tie. Five ties followed up to 23-23, while Iowa State found set point next. A KSU attack error followed to give the Cyclones the 2-0 match lead.
SET THREE
With KSU up 2-0, Iowa State answered taking a lead of 5-2 on a run including two straight Schmitt aces. The Wildcats again fought back to ties at 7s as the set remained close. Duckworth kept on, putting down her 15th kill to come within two (16-14). With K-State leading by four deep into the set (21-17), Iowa State battled back within one following a Gonzalez kill and two Cyclone blocks. The Wildcats took another lead of two, but Iowa State knotted the score at 23s following two huge Duckworth kills and a block by McCune and Brandt. Duckworth brought ISU to match point twice to total 19 kills at 24-23 and 25-24, but extra points followed. K-State went on to extend the match by set score of 28-26.
SET FOUR
Kansas State ran ahead 6-2 as ISU called the early timeout and kept their run going to six straight and put the scoreboard at 9-2. ISU continued to struggle offensively as KSU went up 20-11. Kansas State remained in control to force a fifth by a fourth set score of 25-17.
SET FIVE
Hendricks-Walker and Duckworth put Iowa State on the board first with a block, ISU's 16th of the match. KSU then went in front, while Duckworth tallied her new career high with her 21st kill to make it 3-2. Iowa State called a timeout after KSU went up 6-3, and Duckworth would add another kill to her total out of the break. K-State continued to hold the lead as the teams switched sides (8-4) while ISU fought on to come within two (10-8) after Schmitt and Hendricks-Walker put up a wall. The Wildcats took the next three, but Hendricks-Walker sent over two kills to stop the run. K-State found match point after a successful K-State challenge, and would take the match on the next point, 15-10.
