AMES, Iowa – Four Cyclones scored in double-figures, as No. 5 Iowa State (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) cruised to an 87-52 victory over IU Indianapolis (2-3, 0-0 Horizon) Monday night in Hilton Coliseum.
Curtis Jones led the way with his second-straight 20-point outing (20 points) on 7-of-14 shooting from the field, including four treys, and Joshua Jefferson had a big night with 16 points and 10 boards for his fifth career double-double. Jefferson was perfect from the field (7-of-7), marking the 13th time in school history a Cyclone didn't miss a shot with seven or more attempts.
Iowa State shot 58.1 percent to lead by 20 at the break, but cooled off in the second half, connecting on just 2-of-15 from downtown after intermission. But the Cyclones forced 19 turnovers and held IUI to a 35.0 percent clip en route to their 21st-straight victory in Hilton Coliseum.
Keshon Gilbert chipped in with 11 points and a game-high eight dimes and Dishon Jackson added six points and 10 caroms.
Paul Zalinskas led the Jaguars with 16 points.
How it Happened
Iowa State wasted little time, forging a 17-5 lead by the first media timeout. The Cyclones forced four turnovers and had five different players with a field goal (5-of-7) within the first five minutes.
Jones then scored four straight baskets on four attempts, including a trio of 3-pointers, for 11 points in a 3-minute stretch to push the Cyclone lead to 25-5 with 12:30 remaining in the opening period.
Zalinskas kept the lead from blowing up with 10 straight points for the Jaguars as the Cyclones went cold in the next seven minutes. His 3-pointer with 6:35 left in the first half cut the Cyclone lead to 33-18.
The Cyclone lead was trimmed to 14 points after a 3-pointer by Jarvis Walker with 1:06 left, but ISU answered with a layup from Tamin Lipsey and two buckets from Gilbert in the final minute to give ISU a 49-29 advantage at the break.
ISU forced the Jaguars into 12 miscues in the opening period.
The Cyclones led by as many as 25 points in the early moments of the second half. Jones' fourth trey of the game increased the Cyclone lead to 57-35 at the 14:43 mark.
The lead quickly ballooned to 29 points (68-39) thanks to an 11-0 run behind a pair of paint buckets from Jackson, as the Cyclones were never threatened the rest of the contest.
Key Performer
Tamin Lipsey scored 17 points, dished out three assists and grabbed two rebounds in the Cyclones' win over IUI, but he made an impact on the defensive end. The ultimate two-way player tallied five steals, his fifth career 5+ steal game, to move up to No. 7 on ISU's career steal list with 178.
