MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Iowa State swimming and diving team (3-6, 0-3 Big 12) closed out their 2023-24 season with five swimming events and a 3-meter diving event. The Cyclones recorded new personal bests and strong finishes to their campaign, including an all-time individual performance by junior Carley Caughron.
200 Backstroke
Fallon DeWitt was a standout in the 200 back prelims with a personal best time of 1:59.66. DeWitt is the ninth swimmer in program history to record a 200 backstroke time under two minutes. DeWitt placed ninth overall in the prelims and earned lane four in the consolation finals.
DeWitt swam even faster in the finals with a time of 1:58.28 that led her to a second-place finish and 10th place overall in the event. DeWitt holds the No. 6 spot on the all-time top performers list and has the 12th fastest 200 backstroke time in program history.
Madi Dohrn (2:04.23) and Emma Kuhn (2:08.81) also swam in the 200 backstroke prelims to cap off their seasons.
100 Free
Carley Caughron continued her stellar form across this year's championships in the 100 free prelims, putting up a season-best time of 50.66 and securing a spot in the consolation finals.
Caughron followed that up with a personal best time of 50.45 in the consolation finals to place 14th overall in the event.
Caughron broke a milestone with the performance, tying Petra Plamkiova for the most individual points in a single Big 12 Championship meet at 49. Caughron is the first person to break into the top-four of the list since Hilary Nichols in 2005.
Andie Quirke put up a final time of 50.95 in the prelims. She earned a spot in the bonus finals after placing 21st overall.
In the bonus finals, Quirke set a new personal best of 50.73 to place 21st overall.
200 Breaststroke
Sydney Jackson led all Cyclones in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:17.19. Jackson placed 21st overall and earned a spot in the bonus finals.
Jackson finished 24th overall in the finals, but set a new milestone as she now holds a top 20 spot in career points at the Big 12 Championships for Iowa State at 91 points.
Abbi Crum (2:21.24) and Maddy Rundell (2:19.90) set new season-bests time in the preliminary round.
3-meter Diving
Joscelyn Farner was a standout for the Cyclones in the final diving event of the Big 12 Championships. Farner placed 13th overall with a score of 288.80 in the preliminary round.
Farner followed up that performance with a stronger score of 292.90 in the consolation round, finishing in fifth and 13th overall in the finals.
Ally Blumenfeld (264.05) and Kate Mitchell (259.05) secured top-20 performances in the preliminary round to cap off their strong sophomore seasons.
Farner, Blumenfeld, Mitchell and Lauren Kimball will travel to Houston for the 2024 NCAA Zone Diving D Championships held from March 11-14.
400 Free Relay
A relay team of Caughron, Quirke, Maddie Ziegert, and Ashley Bengtson closed out the Big 12 Championships with a seventh place finish in the 400 free relay. The team combined for a final time of 3:23.93
The Cyclones finish the 2024 Big 12 Championships in eighth place as they close the book on the 2023-24 season.
