AMES, Iowa – Iowa State has swept the weekly conference awards, with Rachel Joseph and Cam Jones picking up the first Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors of outdoor season. Both earn their first league weekly award after setting nation leads.
Joseph set the current No. 1 400-meter time in the nation of 52.21 to open her outdoor season with the victory at the USF Invite. The sophomore's time is an outdoor best to improve her time as the second-fastest performer in Iowa State history, drawing closer to the outdoor record. The time leads the nation by .19 seconds. The Richmond, Texas native earns the 15th women's Big 12 Athlete of the Week honor for Iowa State.
This comes after an outstanding indoor season as Joseph became the first woman in ISU history to earn indoor 400m All-America honors. Joseph was one of six underclassmen to qualify for the event. Joseph also took silver at Big 12 Championships in the event while breaking or resetting the school record for the fifth time of her young career with 51.98.
Jones set the current NCAA-leading shot put mark with his outdoor-best 63-2 3/4 (19.27m) at the USF Invite. Two of Jones' attempts broke his previous outdoor personal best. The Marion, Iowa native totals the 10th men's Big 12 Athlete of the Week honor for Iowa State.
The mark moved him up to No. 5 in Iowa State outdoor history and came less than a week after earning two All-America honors at NCAA Indoor Championships. Jones was one of two men in the nation doubling in the shot put and weight throw and is now a three-time All-American. Also in indoor season, Jones took the shot put Big 12 title with a school record mark to now hold Big 12 titles and the school records in the indoor shot put and weight throw.
