AMES, Iowa – Darius Kipyego has picked up Big 12 Athlete of the Week, announced by the league Wednesday. It is the junior's first weekly award from the conference, earning it after running a 1:45 800-meter.
This is the second week in a row a Cyclone has picked up the honor and the fourth total this outdoor season. ISU has earned a Big 12 Athlete of the Week nod in three out of four weeks of outdoor season.
Kipyego began his outdoor season dominantly going sub-1:46 for the first time at the Hurricane Invite. The First Team All-American who placed sixth at 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships timed in at 1:45.76 for the victory, leading the field by over two seconds. The time ties for the second fastest in the nation and T-No. 15 in the world this outdoor season.

The Warwick, R.I. native makes the move from No. 8 to No. 4 on Iowa State's elite performance list including national champions and multi-time All-Americans. Kipyego topped his previous outdoor best of 1:47.22 set in 2023 and trimmed his all-time best set this indoor season by nearly a second (1:46.71).
This comes after an indoor season for the books as the middle distance runner earned First Team All-America, took down the 1,000m school record with the fourth-fastest all-conditions time in collegiate history and moved to No. 3 in ISU history in the indoor 800m.
Iowa State now totals 27 indoor and outdoor weekly honors in program history.
