DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State kicked off the first day of the Drake Relays with heptathlon events.
In the first event, 100-meter hurdles, Kiersten Fisher finished as the top collegian and fifth overall with a wind-aided 14.13. Kailynn Gubbels finished as the fifth-fastest collegian with a wind-aided 14.91.
Gubbels then placed fifth in the high jump with 5-4 1/2 (1.64m) to add 783 points to her total and move to seventh in the overall standings.
In the third event of the shot put, both Gubbels and Fisher hit season bests. Gubbels hit the mark of 35-11 1/4 (10.95m) while Fisher hit 32-9 (9.98m). Fisher came 3/4 of an inch off her personal best.
Day one ended with the 200m dash, and Gubbels timing in at wind-legal 26.00. The sophomore ends the first four events with a total of 3,026 to hold seventh place overall.
Iowa State will be back in action for day two tomorrow beginning at 12:30 p.m. with the final events of the heptathlon. Other events include the 1,500m, 800m, steeplechase, 5,000m and 10,000m.
