AMES, Iowa – Another ranked opponent, another win for Iowa State.
No. 2 Iowa State (15-1, 5-0) was dominant again, knocking off No. 9 Kansas (12-4, 3-2 Big 12), 74-57 Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum to run its winning streak to 12 games, tying for the third-longest in school history.
Winners of nine-straight over league opponents, the second-longest string in school history, and 28-straight in Hilton Coliseum, Iowa State rattled off a 16-2 run in the game's final five minutes to break open a tight game.
Iowa State shot just 32.1 percent in the second half, but defense will always take care of a slumping offense, as the Cyclones forced 17 Jayhawk turnovers and always came up with the big play when needed.
The Cyclones were led by Curtis Jones, who scored 20 of his 25 points in the first half en route to his fourth 20-point outing in five Big 12 games. Jones had four 3-pointers in the first half to help the Cyclones go into the break with a 40-30 lead. Jones made just his second start of the season in place of an injured Milan Momcilovic.
Dishon Jackson poured in 17 points from the bench and Tamin Lipsey was huge in the second half, tallying eight of his 10 points after intermission, including a pair of clutch 3-pointers to ignite the crowd. Lipsey also had three of ISU's 11 steals to move him to No. 4 on ISU's career steal list (208).
Keshon Gilbert added seven points and a team-high eight dimes, and Joshua Jefferson posted his sixth double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 boards.
Zeke Mayo led the Jayhawks with 17 points.
How it Happened
Kansas led 11-9 after the first eight minutes, as both teams started slow. Jones then caught fire with back-to-back 3-pointers, including a trey from the corner on a baseline out of bounds play to give the Cyclones a 15-11 lead moments later.
Back-to-back runners from Jones increased the Cyclone lead to 24-17 with eight minutes left in the first period. ISU led by eight points (32-24) after the final media timeout, but Zeke Mayo and Rylan Griffen nailed two-straight 3-pointers to trim the lead to 32-30.
But the Cyclones ended the half strong, scoring the final eight points, including two bombs from Jones in the final minute to give ISU a 40-30 lead at the break. Jones had 20 first-half points.
After scoring the first basket of the second half, the Cyclones went cold, allowing the Jayhawks to score nine-straight points and cut the Cyclone lead to 42-39. Jefferson finally ended a five-minute scoring drought for the Cyclones with a bucket inside to stop the KU momentum.
Baskets were well-earned on both sides during the next seven minutes, but the Cyclones were able to go on a 9-2 run started with a Lipsey 3-pointer to give the Cyclones a 57-45 lead with seven minutes remaining.
KU struck back as ISU went cold again. Hunter Dickinson tallied a couple of hoops in a 7-0 run, and suddenly the Cyclone lead was 57-52 with a little over five minutes left in the contest. But Lipsey answered with a clutch 3-pointer moments later to push the lead back up to nine points (61-52).
The Cyclones then put a stamp on the game with an 11-0 run to go up 73-55 with :42 seconds left. Lipsey found Jefferson free down low followed by a Jones trey, and the Cyclones seized all life out of the Jayhawks.
Key Performer
Dishon Jackson, who had started the first 15 games of the season, didn't have a problem coming off the bench for the first time. Jackson was active in the paint, scoring 12 of his 17 points in the opening period to help the Cyclones go into the break with a 10-point lead. He also grabbed four boards and was a solid 9-of-11 at the foul line, including 5-of-6 down the stretch.
