AMES, Iowa – High jumper Braden Goellner has been named the Big 12 Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. This is the redshirt sophomore's first conference honor.
At the Cyclone Open, Goellner improved on his high jump personal best by nearly three inches clearing 7-3 (2.21m) on his second attempt at the height. The clearance ranks third in the nation and T-No. 11 in the world this season. The Saint Charles, Mo. native also jumped right up to No. 3 in Iowa State history with the mark. In nine of the last 10 seasons, heights of 7-3 or greater have qualified for NCAA Indoor Championships.
The performance helped lead the Iowa State men to rank No. 6 in the nation, the highest ranking in school history across indoor and outdoor season. The previous high of No. 7 was set by the men in the 2021 outdoor season.
Goellner is the third in Cyclone men's history to earn an indoor weekly honor and first since Edward Kemboi in 2015. Iowa State men and women now total eight indoor Big 12 Athlete of the Week nods and 28 through indoor and outdoor history.
Goellner and the Cyclones will be back in action Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at the Razorback Invite.
