LAS VEGAS – It was a bit of revenge Tuesday afternoon, as No. 15 Iowa State (6-0) blitzed Creighton (3-3) in its second contest of the Players Era, 78-60. The Cyclones avenged an exhibition loss in Omaha in handling the Bluejays, earning their eighth-straight win over CU since 1990-91.
Yesterday it was ISU win 100, today it was career win 200 for ISU head coach T.J. Otzelberger, who bested the man who hired him at Iowa State, Greg McDermott. Over half of Otzelberger's wins have come at ISU (101) and 26 of those 101 wins have been over ranked foes (including yesterday's triumph over St. John's).
Down star point guard Tamin Lipsey, Iowa State had little issue finding its offensive and defensive flow against Creighton as the Cyclones cruised to a wire-to-wire win. The Cyclones improved to 22-11 in Feast Week tournaments since 2011-12 with the win and are now 9-4 in such tournaments under Coach Otzelberger.
Four Cyclones found themselves in double figures by game's end, with freshman Frenchman Killyan Toure leading the way with a game-high 20 points. Toure's career high came along with stellar defense as he filled in admirably for Lipsey. Joshua Jefferson finished with a double-double (18 points, 10 boards), while fellow big man Blake Buchanan fell just one rebound shy of joining him (12 points, 9 boards). Milan Momcilovic navigated foul trouble but finished with 10 points.
Jasen Green (15) and Josh Dix (15) led the Bluejays in scoring, with Dix tying for a team-best three triples. Isaac Traudt and Hudson Greer also had three longballs, while Owen Freeman led the team in rebounds with nine.
Iowa State held Creighton to just 38 percent shooting from the field and forced 17 turnovers. ISU converted those turnovers into 19 points. The Cyclones dominated both the glass and the paint, outrebounding the Jays (39-34) and scoring a whopping 32 more points in the paint (52-20).
How it Happened
The Cyclones started the game about as dominantly as one could hope on defense, as the first three Creighton possessions went the length of the shot clock and none of the three attempts mustered by the Bluejays drew iron.
ISU scored first, thanks to a pair of Momcilovic free throws, and after taking the lead, would never give it back. The Bluejays played to a tie four times in the first half, but that was as close as they'd get.
The Cyclones began to really separate at the ten-minute mark, rattling off a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 25-15 lead. By the end of the half, the Cyclone lead would grow to as large as 14, as Momcilovic bookended the half with a step-back triple to send ISU into the break up 40-26.
Toure had a team-best ten points at the break, while Jefferson had nine, Momcilovic had seven and both Heise and Buchanan had six. ISU shot 45.7 percent from the floor and 40 percent from deep in the stanza all while holding CU to 31.3 percent from the field and forcing 10 first-half turnovers.
After ISU pushed its second-half lead to 15 just three minutes in, Creighton responded with a 7-0 run, all courtesy of Dix, to make it 46-38 with just over 15 minutes to go. Following his spurt of a pair of jumpers and a triple, ISU regained control of the game flow and pushed its lead out to 16 by the 12:26 mark and was able to cruise from there.
Creighton never got the score back within ten points and ISU would go on to win by 18, bringing its Players Era winning margin to 9.5.
Key Performer
Nate Heise got the starting nod in Lipsey's absence and he quietly did it all for ISU. Heise finished with eight points, while dishing a team-high six assists and pulling down five rebounds. He went 2-3 from the field, canning a three, and shot 75 percent from the charity stripe.
