AMES, Iowa – Iowa State freshman gymnast Haylee Hardin has earned her second consecutive Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Hardin, a Wichita Falls, Texas native, was superb in the team's only meet of the week, claiming titles in both events she competed in. Her performance helped ISU earn its highest score of the season in the home conference opener against Arizona State.
She began the meet anchoring ISU's vault squad, scoring 9.800. Her 9.8 ended up earning her the event titles – her second vault win of the year and fourth overall. Her 9.800 is tied for the second-highest vault score of her career.
Hardin wrapped the with another anchor performance – this time on floor. She helped the Cyclones post a 49.325 – the team's highest floor score of the season. On floor, she wowed the crowd and earned a 9.950, the highest score by any Cyclone on any event this season.
In fact, she's one of just 21 gymnasts nationally to score a 9.950 on floor this season and it is the highest score by any Big 12 gymnast through five weeks. She joins teammates Noelle Adams and Ella Schell as Cyclones who've earned a 9.950 on floor.
Haylee has now earned five event titles this season thanks to her pair of crowns against Arizona State. She becomes the fifth Iowa State gymnast to earn multiple Newcomer of the Week honors in a single season. She joins Michelle Shealy, Andrea Maldonado, Addy De Jesus and Adams as winners of multiple awards.
Iowa State will be back in action this Sunday, February 9, when it heads East for a meeting with the Mountaineers in Morgantown. Sunday's meet is set to begin at 1 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
