Iowa State Places Second at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic

MARICOPA, Arizona - The Cyclones shoot the third-lowest three-round score of the year (841) en route to a second place finish at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic. #27 Long Beach State took the lead halfway through the final round and never looked back, beating the Cyclones by fourteen strokes. Iowa State pick up wins over three Top-50 ranked opponents, and held the lowest Par 4 average in the field at 3.93 (-11).Â
Luke Gutschewski finishes in a tie for fourth place (-8), his third Top-5 finish of the season and tenth of his career. Gutschewski's 64 in the first round tied the third-lowest round in school history and the second-lowest of his career. The senior from Elkhorn, Nebraska tallied eight birdies in the first round and twelve in total, and had the third-lowest Par 4 average in the tournament (3.83). After his first tournament win at the Bell Bank "Pay It Forward" Collegiate, Zach May follows it up by tying for seventh place (-7) after carding a pair of 69's in the first and third rounds. May's 54-hole score of 209 ties the second-lowest score of his career, just behind last week's 206. May carded a team-high fourteen birdies these last two days, good for ninth-most in the field.Â
Owen Sawyer finishes four under-par and ties for fourteenth place along with teammate Paul Beauvy. Sawyer secured his fourth eagle of the season in the second round yesterday, and also tallied eleven birdies in the tournament. Beauvy now has seven Top-20 finishes on the season, the most on the team. The junior ended the tournament with eleven birdies and two rounds under-par. Dianchao Wu tied for 62nd with a score of 221. Wu had the third-most pars in the field (40) and carded five birdies.Â
#27 Long Beach State came out victorious at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, finishing -37 after a twelve under-par performance in the final round. #47 Charlie Forster and #82 Alejando De Castro led the way for Long Beach State, finishing in 1st and 2nd place, respectively. Forster shot a -20 (196) while De Castro finished fourteen under-par.Â
The Cyclones are back at it once again next week, taking on the Tiger Collegiate Invitational, where Iowa State came out on top of last year's tournament. The first round will start on Monday, April 7th in Columbia, Missouri.Â
