AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior infielder Sydney Malott and sophomore right-handed pitcher Lauren Schurman combined to sweep the conference weekly awards on Tuesday, the conference announced. Malott was named the Big 12 Player of the Week, while Schurman earned the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week.
Malott becomes the seventh player in school history to earn a Big 12 Player of the Week honor, while Schurman became the seventh player in school history to earn a Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honor. It's just the third time in Big 12 history that ISU has swept the weekly awards and the first time since 2017.
Both Malott and Schurman played huge roles in Iowa State's historic weekend where it took the road series over No. 17 Oklahoma State, 2-1. The series win was ISU's first-ever road series victory over a ranked opponent. The series win was also the third of the season – a new program record for most in a year. The Cyclones claimed Big 12 wins eight and nine in the process, setting the mark for most conference wins in a single season in school annals.
Malott collected five hits last week for the Cyclones, with all five going for extra bases. The junior out of Liberty, Missouri, cranked four home runs on the week – all coming on the road at No. 17 Oklahoma State. She launched two long balls in Friday's series-opener against the Cowgirls to earn her first career multi-home run game. She was one of just two Cyclones to have hits in all four games last week, as she led the team in homers, RBI (6), total bases (18) and slugging percentage (1.385).
Schurman made appearances in three of the team's four games, totaling a 0.72 ERA on the week. She earned her ninth win of the season against Kansas City in the midweek before earning a pair of starts in wins against the Cowgirls. Schurman totaled 9.2 innings of work, allowing just one earned run across her three outings.
Both Malott and Schurman will be back in action this afternoon, as Iowa State is set to host Iowa in the first of two Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk series contests. Today's game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+. As always, admission to the Cyclones Sports Complex is free.
