Cyclones Fall To Kansas, 4-2

AMES, Iowa – No. 57 Iowa State (10-9, 4-7 Big 12) earned a Top 30 doubles victory and nearly battled back from a deficit but ultimately fell, 4-2, Saturday afternoon to No. 45 Kansas (12-9, 6-5) at the Iowa State Tennis Facility.

The Cyclones got a ranked win at No. 1 doubles, but the Jayhawks were able to clinch the important doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.

Anna Supapitch Kuearum and Cristina Ramos Sierra beat No. 30 Gracie Mulville and Heike Janse van Vuuren, 6-2.

After KU took No. 3 doubles to even things up, the second court came down to a tiebreak. Julia Camblor and Mari Paz Alberto Vilar fell, 7-6 (3), to the Jayhawk duo of Jasmine Adams and Yerkezhan Arystanbekova to send the Cyclones into singles needing four wins.

Kansas extended its lead to 2-0 as No. 106 Mulville defeated No. 109 Kuearum, 6-1, 6-3, in a battle of ranked foes.

But the Cyclones bounced back with wins on court six and two. Valeska San Martin Ramirez won her third straight with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Meriem Ben Ezzedine. Julia Camblor responded shortly after with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Maria Titova, knotting things up at 2-2.

The Jayhawks went back in front as Kyoka Kubo rallied after dropping the first set, 6-4, to Alberto Vilar to win the final two 6-0, 6-0.

With players remaining on courts four and five, Kansas' Heike Janse van Vuuren outlasted Cyclone freshman Ramos Sierra in a third-set tiebreak, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (2), to secure the win for the Jayhawks.

The Cyclones return to action next Friday when they host No. 62 Kansas State at 4 p.m. In the final weekend of the season, Iowa State hosts No. 20 Oklahoma State on Senior Day at noon. The Cyclones will recognize their lone senior Kuearum at the event.
