Clark, Joseph Advance to Quarterfinals

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Rachel Joseph and Makayla Clark earned another run cementing their place in quarterfinals as the women began competition at NCAA West Prelims.

Joseph was her usual self and produced a sub-51 second time in the 400m to advance. Joseph won her heat and put up the third-fastest overall time in the first round with 50.95. It is the junior's sixth-fastest time of her career, and she now holds the top 15 times in Iowa State history.

Clark then made herself the next to qualify for quarterfinals finishing with 2:03.31 in the 800m, the fastest time in the first round. Clark led her heat from start to finish.

Brooklyn Sandvig once again lowered her 100m personal best finishing in 11.48. Sandvig came just .01 off the program record of 11.47 set in 2000. Sandvig then ran in the 200m to close the night, clocking 23.48.

In the nearly 90-degree heat, Becca Heitzig and Bella Heikes kicked off running events with the 1,500m. Heitzig ran 4:25.12 while Heikes clocked 4:27.64.

Kaitlyn Burson had a best mark of 180-10 (55.12m) in the hammer, hit on her third and final throw. Burson ends her Cyclone career as the school record holder in both the hammer and weight throw.

Tomorrow is the men's final day of competition at NCAA West Prelims. Iowa State begins action at 1 p.m. and events include the discus, high jump, 1,500m, steeple, 800m, 200m and 5,000m.
