Vargas’ First Career Win Highlights Day Two in Kansas

Lawrence, Kansas – Freshman newcomer Valentina Vargas picked up her first collegiate win on Friday, adding to a total of five Cyclone victories on day two of the Jayhawk Invitational.
The Cyclones won two of its three doubles matches Friday against Kansas. Ashlee Narker and Julia Camblor defeated Kyoka Kubo and Heike Janse Van Vuuren, 6-4, while Suzanie Pretorius and Gabriella Kellner took down Meg McCarty and Kinley VanPelt, 7-5. No. 34 Mari Paz Alberto Vilar and Stanislava Shulzhenko fell in their doubles match.
In singles, the Cyclones tallied three more wins over the Jayhawks. No. 34 Alberto Vilar came back from losing the first set to down Van Vuuren, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Vargas earned her first career victory by knocking off VanPelt, 6-4, 6-2. Kellner capped off the day for the Cyclones with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win over Simryn Jacob.
The Cyclones will conclude their trip to Lawrence with an unofficial match against Memphis 9 a.m. Saturday.
