TUCSON, Ariz. – Iowa State (9-5, 3-0 Big 12) downed Arizona (5-8, 0-2 Big 12) on the road Friday night to remain unbeaten in Big 12 play. It is the first 3-0 Big 12 start by ISU since 2023.
Iowa State lost the first, but responded in the second and never looked back outscoring Arizona 50-26 in the final two sets. Set scores on the night were 19-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-10.
Nayeli Gonzalez led the match with 16 kills, while Nayeli Ti'a and D'Aaliyah Kemp joined Gonzalez in double figures. Ti'a had a double-double with her stellar defense of 17 digs to go along with 11 kills, and Kemp had an errorless 10 kills on 15 swings for a dominant hitting percentage of 0.667.
Rachel Van Gorp had 17 digs through the four-setter, and Ella Florez joined Ti'a in having a double-double performance as the freshman setter had 23 assists and 11 digs.
Pam McCune led blockers with five, while Kemp and Macie Lupkes each had four.
SET ONE
Alea Goolsby tooled the block and followed with an ace as ISU went up 6-5 to start. Arizona would tie things at 8s, but ISU took the next two to remain ahead and reach 10 first. Arizona then took a lead at 13-12 and held it at the media timeout (15-14). Kemp put down a kill as the set saw another tie at 16-16 but Arizona stayed with the lead at 18-16 as Iowa State called a timeout. The home team went on to take the set 25-19.
SET TWO
With ISU leading 5-4, Goolsby continued firing off kills but the Wildcats again flipped the lead at 9-8. The frame was a close one as Gonzalez registered a set-tying kill to make it 11-11. A Cyclone run of three then made it 14-12, and Gonzalez had yet another kill to reach the media timeout up 15-13. The Cyclones continued to roll taking a run of four (18-13) after Florez served to an ace. After a Wildcat timeout, the Cyclones continued their run, making it six straight (20-13) as Arizona called another break in the action. ISU went on to tie up the match with a set score of 25-20 on a Ti'a kill.
SET THREE
A block by Lupkes and Ti'a started off the set, while another by Lupkes and Gonzalez came next. Cyclone blockers continued putting up walls as Kemp and McCune teamed up for one to make it 9-7, ISU. The duo paired up for another to bring the scoreboard to 11-7 while Arizona followed calling a timeout. Kemp's ninth kill without an error on just 14 swings kept ISU hot and the Cyclones would hold the 15-10 lead at the media timeout. Ti'a's 10th kill brought the Cyclones to 20 (20-15), and ISU sealed the set at 25-16 as Ava Martin sent over an ace.
SET FOUR
Ti'a tallied two early aces in the fourth as ISU led 5-1. Aces continued to fall as Van Gorp had two straight, extending a run of six (11-2). The run was not done as a McCune kill and Arizona error came next, causing a timeout by the host. Iowa State commanded the set only allowing 10 points while hitting at .412.
