Cyclones Come Up Just Short Against Illinois

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team fell just short against Illinois Friday evening, losing 4-3 in seven hard-fought matches.
The Cyclones took an early 1-0 lead thanks to a top 60 doubles win from No. 51 Mari Paz Alberto Vilar and Stanislava Shulzhenko over No. 59 Tess Bucher and Alice Xu, along with a 6-1 victory from Julia Camblor and Gabriella Kellner.
In singles, every match was competitive, with the Illini taking four of six. No. 58 Alberto Vilar downed No. 67 McKenna Schaefbauer, 7-5, 7-6 (5), while Julia Camblor defeated Ariel Madatali, 6-4, 6-4, for the Cyclones. Lizzie Isyanova ultimately clinched the win for the Illini, beating Alicia Dale in three sets in the final match.
The Cyclones are back in action Sunday at 11 a.m. for the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.
