MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – For the first time since 2022, Iowa State swept a non-conference tournament as it capped the Gopher Indoor Classic with a 5-0 record by downing LIU 9-1 in six innings.
The Cyclones would hold a 1-0 run through four innings before piling on eight runs between the fifth and sixth innings to earn their fourth run-rule victory of the season. The 10-4 start through 14 contests is the best beginning to a season since 2022, when the team also opened the year 10-4.
Tatum Johnson went three-for-four on the day, owning a game-high in both hits and RBI (3). Jessie Clemons, Karlee Ford, Reagan Bartholomew, Kasey Kane and Tiana Poole all finished with two hits as the team tallied double-digit knocks for the eighth time in 14 games. Bartholomew finished with two RBI, with both coming on her final hit, which would serve as a run-rule walk-off.
Lauren Schurman (5-2) earned the start for the Cyclones and went the distance, handling all six innings of action for the complete game. She allowed just one run after facing 24 batters, tallying four punchouts. For Schurman, the complete game was her first since her freshman season.
Five LIU players finished with a hit on the day, with Jennifer Rodriguez accounting for the team's lone RBI. GiGi Clavel started in the circle, going five innings and allowing three runs on nine hits. Ava Fairbanks replaced Clavel, allowing six runs on five hits.
The Cyclones outhit the Sharks, 14-5, and limited LIU to just one extra-base hit. ISU was clean defensively, handling all balls put in play while Long Island committed a pair of errors.
How it Happened
After stranding a pair of Sharks in the top of the first, Iowa State was able to get on the board in the bottom of the frame. Clemons led off with a double into left and was then immediately driven in by Johnson, who also doubled into left.
Three straight scoreless innings followed the first, before ISU added on in the fifth. Tiana Poole led off the frame with a solo shot into right center – her first home run of the season. With two outs, Johnson doubled and Ford followed up with a single to left-center to add a third run and make it 3-0.
In the sixth, LIU got on the board, stringing together three hits for its first run of the game and trimming the lead to two.
ISU closed things out in the sixth, though, scoring six runs to earn a run-rule victory. A pair of singles opened the inning before Andrews drove in a run. With runners on first and second, Clemons smacked her second double of the game into left-center to plate one and put runners on second and third. Next up, Johnson had a double of her own, this one down the left line, to score a pair and put ISU up, 7-1. With Johnson on base, Ford reached on a fielder's choice to bring up Bartholomew. She'd send a single into the left center gap, plating both Ford and Johnson, to make it 9-1 and bring the run-rule into action as ISU won its fifth game of the weekend.
