PROVO, Utah – After taking game one in a shootout, Iowa State (26-18, 6-11 Big 12) failed to repeat its offensive success as it fell in game two to BYU (16-27, 6-11 Big 12) by a score of 6-5.
The Cyclones led from the second inning until the sixth, as four unanswered runs from the Cougars across the sixth and seventh innings proved to be the decider. The teams entered the seventh knotted at five-all, but a BYU walk-off blast ended things.
Tatum Johnson and McKenna Andrews each had multi-hit outings, accounting for four of the team's six hits. Jessie Clemons and Tiana Poole had the other two knocks. Andrews was tied for a game-best two RBI, while Isabelle Nosan drew a pair of free passes to lead all players.
Hailey Holtz made her first career start on the night, handling three and a third innings. The rookie righty allowed just two runs on seven hits during her stint. Lauren Schurman (15-6) replaced her, handling the remainder of the contest, picking up three strikeouts in the loss.
BYU's offense continued to shine on Friday evening, as the team had 12 hits. Maddie Udall-Woolley had the walk-off home run and led all players with three hits on the night. Gianna Mares (7-9) started the game, exited, and re-entered to close things out as she had six punchouts in her seventh win of the season.
How it Happened
After seeing Iowa State open the scoring on Thursday, BYU got things going with a Lily Owens solo blast in the bottom of the first to get on the board.
The Cyclones battled back to take the lead in the second, taking advantage of a pair of walks and a hit by pitch. With the bases loaded and one out, Clemons drew a walk to score ISU's first run of the game. Two batters later, Reagan Bartholomew also drew a bases-loaded walk to bring across a go-ahead second run.
After neither side plated a run in the third, ISU scored two more in the fourth. Andrews opened the frame with a solo blast, her fourth of the season, to push the Cyclone lead to 3-1. Following a Clemons single and stolen base, Johnson singled to the first baseman and a following BYU error would allow Clemons to score from second and make it a three-run advantage.
The Cougars got one back in the bottom of the inning, as a leadoff walk was eventually driven in by a Lexie Bennett single.
Leading 4-2, Iowa State plated a fifth run in the sixth inning. Nosan led the inning off with a walk and moved to third on back-to-back wild pitches. With no outs, Andrews ripped a single through the right side to plate Nosan and put ISU up three.
A pair of two-out knocks from the Cougars in the bottom of the inning would tie things up heading into the seventh. After ISU failed to score in the top half of the inning, Udall-Woolley took the fourth pitch she saw and gave it a ride, securing a walk-off win.
