PROVO, Utah – Iowa State (27-18, 7-11 Big 12) secured its second Big 12 series win of the season, snapping a three-series skid, downing BYU (16-28, 6-12 Big 12) on the road, winning 9-6 at Gail Miller Field.
Iowa State's prolific offense returned in the series clincher, as the Cyclone bats scored nine runs on nine hits, drawing five walks. ISU never trailed in the rubber match, leading throughout, to earn its first conference series win since mid-March.
McKenna Andrews was the only Cyclone to notch multiple hits, as the senior infielder logged a pair and drove in two. Kadence Shepherd and Karlee Ford matched Andrews' pair of RBI with a pair of their own, while Jessie Clemons scored a game-high three runs. Clemons also drew a pair of walks and swiped her 13th bag of the season.
Ava Mullen (4-4) got the start for the Cyclones, dealing 41 innings of work. She was perfect through 2.1 innings before allowing her first baserunner. Lauren Schurman handled a pair of high-leverage situations, closing things out for the Cyclones. Schurman did more than just pith on the day, as the junior recorded both her first career hit and RBI in the win.
For BYU, Hailey Shuler had a day both at the plate and in the circle. The sophomore struck out six and drove in a pair, launching her sixth homer of the year. Rita Tavita matched Shuler's team-high two RBI with two of her own. Tavita, like Shuler, had a home run.
How it Happened
Iowa State got the scoring started early, as Clemons led off the game with a walk. A stolen base and wild pitch later, she found herself on third with Ford up to bat. A deep fly out to center would easily score Clemons and give Ford an RBI sac fly to put ISU up, 1-0.
Following a scoreless second, the Cyclones added on in the third. ISU would load the bases with two outs, only to see Shepherd come through in the clutch. Shepherd slapped a single through the right side to score a pair and put the Cyclones up 3-0.
After notching their first hit in the third, the Cougars plated their first run in the fourth. With one out, Maddie Udall-Woolley smashed a solo shot to put BYU on the board and trim the lead to two.
Clemons led off the fifth with a stand-up double before advancing to third on a passed ball. In what was a repeat of the first inning, Ford drove a deep fly out to center, plating Clemons, and putting ISU back on top by three, 4-1. Later, with runners on the corners, Tatum Johnson drove in a fifth run to extend the lead.
BYU answered with three-straight singles in the bottom of the fifth to load the bases with no outs. Schurman would enter in relief and allow just one run on a sacrifice fly to get out of the jam.
Up 5-2, ISU scored two more in the sixth. Sydney Malott opened the frame with a single to right field before being moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tiana Poole. With one on, Andrews cranked her second homer of the weekend over the right-center fence to push the Cyclone lead to 7-2.
The Cougars answered with a two-run shot of their own in the bottom of the sixth.
A day after seeing BYU come back in the seventh, ISU added more insurance in the final frame to secure the win. With the bases loaded and no outs, Schurman blooped a single into right-center to plate a run before a Malott sac fly plated a ninth and final run.
BYU attempted another late rally, but fell a few runs short. The Cougars would plate two final runs, courtesy of a homer, before falling to the Cyclones.
