LAWRENCE, Kan. – Iowa State (28-21, 8-13 Big 12) was unable to earn its third Big 12 series win of the season, falling to Kansas (32-16, 13-8 Big 12) in eight innings in Saturday's finale, 4-2.
Iowa State held the advantage for 5.5 innings before Kansas leveled the score at two in the sixth inning. The two teams would head to extras, tied at two, before KU's Anna Soles ended things with a two-run blast in the bottom of the eighth.
Sydney Malott led all players with three knocks, driving in a run, while both Tatum Johnson and Kadence Shepherd had two hits apiece. Johnson had the team's other RBI, smashing a solo shot in the top of the first inning.
Lauren Schurman dealt 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits. Ralston would relieve Schurman in the sixth, handling the remainder of the game.
Kansas was limited to just five hits, scattering them across five athletes. Anna Soles led the team in RBI with two, both coming on her walk-off homer. Campbell Bagshaw and Kadence Stafford accounted for the other two RBI. Three Jayhawks saw the circle, with Lila Partridge earning the win and striking out one.
How it Happened
Iowa State jumped in front for the third consecutive game, as Johnson blasted a solo homer in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
Neither team would plate a run in the next two frames. In the fourth, ISU got back on the board thanks to a pair of extra-base hits. With one out, Shepherd doubled to the right-center gap to give the Cyclones a runner in scoring position. One batter later, Malott pounded a ball into the same right-center gap, scoring Shepherd and earning herself a double and putting ISU up, 2-0.
A pair of walks put Kansas in business in the sixth. With two outs and runners on first and second, Hailey Cripe singled into right field to score a run and put Kansas on the board. A batter later, with runners now on second and third, Campbell Bagshaw smacked a ball into left field for a single, scoring the tying run. The go-ahead run tried to score from second but was thrown out by Clemons from left field to keep the game tied.
Neither team would score in the seventh, leading way to an extra frame. The Cyclones put two on board in the extra frame, but left them stranded. In the bottom half, following a one-out walk, Soles homered to right field to plate the winning runs and walk-off the Cyclones.
