SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Competing in its 16th-straight NCAA Regional, the Iowa State Women's Golf team sits in seventh place after the opening round of the NCAA Louisville Regional. The No. 3 seed, the Cyclonitas were one of seven teams in the 12-team field that shot under par in the first round.
No. 18 Iowa State's 287 as a team is tied for the sixth-best NCAA round in program history and the second-best in the first round of an NCAA Regional. No. 19 Ole Miss and No. 30 Houston share the team lead after one round, as they both shot a six-under-par 282. Nine of the 12 teams are within seven strokes of each other after the opening round.
Nichakorn Pinprayoon led the Cyclones in the first round, as she shot a one-under-par 71 to sit in a tie for 18th. It was the second time in her career she has shot a 71 or better in the NCAA's, becoming just the ninth player in school history to have multiple rounds of 71 or better in the postseason. Pinprayoon, ranked No. 35 in the country, turned in three birdies on the day, including a pair on back-to-back holes on the back nine. Iowa State has counted Pinprayoon's score in 29 of 34 rounds this season, including the last 13.
Three Cyclones were even on the day, as they sit in a tie for 23rd. Isabella Yan, Alexandra Vidal and Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn all shot a 72 in the opening round. Yan and Chul-Ak-Sorn both had three birdies, while Vidal had two on the front nine. Yan had three-straight holes with a birdie on the front nine. Chul-Ak-Sorn was three-under-par on par five's, tied for the best in the field in the round.
Pammy Chookaew rounded out the lineup for the Cyclones, as she shot a four-over par 76. Chookaew is in 51st place overall, as her string of 18-straight rounds counting for the Cyclones was snapped. Iowa State has counted Chookaew's round in 31 of the 34 rounds played this season.
Tee times will start at 7:55 a.m. on Tuesday for the Cyclones in the second round at the Louisville Golf Club.
