AMES, Iowa - In an ever-changing intercollegiate athletics landscape, one constant that remains is the continued classroom excellence of Iowa State University student-athletes, who established school records for both multi-year institutional (992) and single-year (997) Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores according to data released today by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The multi-year APR rate is calculated based upon the 2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25 academic years, while the one-year score was generated from the 2024-25 academic term.
"Iowa State's school record APR scores are a direct reflection of our student-athletes' commitment to classroom success, a department culture that emphasizes academic achievement and the support of our coaches and staff," said Endowed Cyclone Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard. "We are also grateful for the continued role that Iowa State's dedicated faculty and staff play in helping our student-athletes achieve at high levels in the classroom."
ISU's multi-year institutional APR average of 992, a two-point improvement over its 2023-24 mark, tied with Kansas for second in the Big 12 behind Cincinnati's league-leading 995 mark. Arizona State (990), West Virginia (990), Baylor (989), UCF (989), Colorado (989), Arizona (988), Oklahoma State (988), Texas Tech (988), Houston (985), Kansas State (983), Utah (983), BYU (981) and TCU (981) round our the Big 12's multi-year data.
Iowa State's multi-year average was also six points higher than the NCAA Division I average of 986 and marked the 10th-consecutive year its multi-year APR score either set or matched a new school-record. All-told, 15 of ISU's 16 teams are at or above the national multi-year threshold in their respective sport.
Two Cyclone programs posted Big 12 co-leading multi-year rates—women's basketball (1000) and football (992), and both will receive APR Public Recognition Awards for their academic prowess from the NCAA.
Eleven ISU teams registered perfect single-year scores— Men's Basketball, Men's Cross Country, Men's Golf, Women's Basketball, Women's Cross Country, Women's Golf, Gymnastics, Soccer, Tennis, Women's Track and Volleyball, while 13 programs either improved or posted the same multi-year rate from a year ago.
The Academic Progress Rate measures the eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team and serves as a predictor of graduation success. Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The score measures eligibility and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25 academic years.
The four-year Academic Progress Rate national average for Division I teams was 986, a two-point improvement over the 984 recorded each of the previous three years, as the division marked the 22nd year of APR data collection. During those 22 years, overall student-athlete academic success has risen substantially.
