LAS VEGAS – Iowa State (5-5, 0-0 Big 12) fell to Hawaii (8-2, 0-0 Big West) in the Cyclones' first five-setter of the season by scores of 20-25, 25-15, 11-25, 25-19, 11-15.

After falling in the first, ISU took back the second 25-15 to tie up the match while outhitting Hawaii .314-.167. Iowa State dropped the third decisively, but led wire-to-wire in the fourth to force a fifth. The fifth set proved close, but Hawaii pulled in front after a tie at 7s to take the match.

Iowa State blockers outblocked Hawaii 12.0-6.0, led by freshman Macie Lupkes who nearly had a 10-block match with nine. Six Cyclones totaled two solo and 20 block assists.

Nayeli Gonzalez (19) and Nayeli Ti'a (15) led the Cyclones in kills on the night. Gonzalez led the match.

Rachel Van Gorp had double figure digs before the second set ended, and went on to total 18 while serving to two aces and assisting on four kills. Ella Florez also had double-figure digs with 11.

SET ONE

Mesaiya Bettis put down her second kill on her second swing to make it 3-2 with Hawaii in front to start. In the midst of a run, Bettis went four-for-four as ISU came back within one (9-8), and the Cyclones capped the run at four on the next rally with a wall put up by Macie Lupkes and Ti'a. Kills by D'Aaliyah Kemp, Gonzalez and Ti'a followed by a Hawaii attack error brought things to 16-15, Hawaii, at the midway point but UH followed taking the next six. Gonzalez halted the run going back-to-back with kills while Lupkes delivered another (22-18) but Hawaii's lead was too much for the Cyclones to catch as UH took the first 25-20.

SET TWO

Iowa State grabbed an early 6-4 lead on a block by Bettis and Lupkes, while the Cyclones kept with it going ahead 11-7 to prompt a Hawaii timeout. Behind the serving of Van Gorp the run continued out of the break, extending to seven-straight (15-7) as UH called its second timeout. Soon after, Abbi Brenizer sent over a kill and followed it up with an ace as ISU led 19-12. Gonzalez hit kill No. 10 as the set neared the end, but Gonzalez was not done there as the outside hitter hit two more and dialed in an ace as ISU evened the match at 25-15.

SET THREE
Hawaii responded by beginning with an advantage of 11-6, causing ISU to call a timeout. Hawaii's lead grew to double digits at 18-8 and the Rainbow Wahine continued to build on it. UH reached 20 after a 4-0 run and went on to take back the match lead by a set score of 25-11.

SET FOUR

Two-straight blocks put the Cyclones up 3-1, while ISU had its third of the set to make it 4-3. ISU hit 10 first with Hawaii close behind at 8, and the Cyclones also won the race to point 15 as Gonzalez hit kill No. 15. An unsuccessful Hawaii challenge confirmed the score at 21-16, but UH scored the next three to make it a two-point set. The Rainbow Wahine run ended on the next rally with ISU's sixth block of the set, and the seventh Cyclone block proved to be the set winner at 25-19.

SET FIVE

ISU led until Hawaii flipped it at 5-4, and after kills by Ti'a and Gonzalez the score was tied at 6s. The set saw another tie at 7-7, but Hawaii followed to lead 10-7 to force an Iowa State timeout. A Gonzalez kill and Hawaii attack error put the teams back within one, while Hawaii remained with the lead going ahead 13-9. ISU scored the next two, but Hawaii allowed no more Cyclone points to take the match 15-11.

Iowa State closes the Lucky Aces Volleyball Invite and the non-conference slate tomorrow meeting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The match begins at 11:30 a.m. CT and will not be streamed.
