Abdul-Aziz (Don Smith) awed Cyclone fans basketball fans in the late 1960s. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he left a lasting impression on Iowa State basketball, breaking nearly every major school record upon graduation. He led the Big Eight Conference in scoring his final two season, averaging 24.8 points as a junior and 24.2 points as a senior. Abdul-Aziz and NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain were the first two Big Eight cagers to score over 600 points in a season twice. His 1,642 career points were the most of any Iowa collegian and still ranks eight on ISU's career scoring chart. In 1968, ISU's All-America center was the fourth pick in the professional draft, being selected by the Cincinnati Royals.
