Related Links More from Cyclones.tv Veryl Long was a three-time All-American and national champion wrestler who helped Iowa State capture the 1965 NCAA team title, the first under legendary head coach Harold Nichols. A native of Washington, Pa., Long capped off his career by winning the 147-pound NCAA title in 1965. Long, who placed third and fourth, respectively, at the NCAA Championship in 1963 and 1964, was the 1963 Big Eight champion at 147 pounds. Long's victory over Gettysburg's Joe Bavaro in the 147-pound finals was a catalyst for ISU's amazing final-day comeback to win the 1965 team title by a score of 87-86 over second-place Oklahoma State.
