Tim Bennett will begin his first season as associate head coach for the Cyclones. Bennett, an Omaha, Neb. native, comes to Iowa State from Portland State, where he was the team’s head coach. Bennett guided the Vikings to the Big Sky Tournament last season, the team’s first postseason berth since 2004. Before taking over the Portland State program, Bennett had been the head coach at North Dakota.
Bennett led Portland State to a 9-9-2 Big Sky Conference record over the past three seasons. The Vikings contended for the Big Sky regular season title down to the final match in the last two seasons, despite fielding teams that were mostly comprised of underclassmen. In his only season at North Dakota, he led the Fighting Sioux to a 14-5-2 record.
Bennett has compiled a four-year head coaching mark of 30-39-7 and has coached five all-region and 10 first-team all-conference performers. He has also coached three conference MVP winners, including Portland State senior defender Juli Edwards, who was the Big Sky Conference Defensive MVP in both 2006 and 2007.
Prior to being a head coach, Bennett served eight seasons as an assistant coach at Kentucky. He was an assistant for the men’s program from 1996-99 and the women’s team from 1999-2003, helping the Wildcat men and women to a combined four NCAA Tournament appearances.
