AMES, Iowa (AP) - Quarterback Sage Rosenfels accounted for two touchdowns in his first start and Ennis Haywood and Darren Davis both rushed for more than 100 yards as Iowa State rolled over Indiana State 33-7 Thursday night.
Rosenfels, helped by a nifty fake from Davis, ran 52 yards on a bootleg for a touchdown on the game's second play and threw a 25-yard scoring pass to J.J. Moses in the third quarter.
Haywood, who rushed for 178 yards as a freshman last fall, carried 24 times for 172 yards and scored a touchdown to help Iowa State win its opener for the first time since 1995. Davis, the starting tailback, added 112 yards in 13 carries and also scored a touchdown before leaving the game with a lower leg injury late in the third quarter.
While the Cyclones gave their fans plenty to cheer, the crowd of 33,936 fell silent when Indiana State defensive end Shannon Jackson was knocked unconscious with 6:14 left in the first half.
The game was stopped for about 15 minutes while trainers and paramedics attended to Jackson, a 6-foot-2, 270-pound senior. The type of injury wasn't immediately clear, but an immobilizer was placed around his head and he was taken to an Ames hospital by ambulance.
Iowa State, seeking to re-establish its running game after struggling in that area last season, rushed for 434 of its 551 yards. It was the first time Iowa State had two players over 100 yards since Sept. 23, 1995, when Troy Davis, Darren's brother, rushed for 302 yards and Graston Norris had 128 in a 57-30 victory over UNLV.
Using a bit of trickery, Iowa State struck early. Rosenfels, who won a close battle with Derrick Walker for the starting job, faked a handoff to Davis out of a shotgun formation at the Iowa State 48. As the defense converged on Davis, Rosenfels sped around left end and went the distance untouched.
Walker also played, directing an 11-play, 85-yard drive that produced Iowa State's second touchdown, a 12-yard run by Haywood on which he broke three tackles.
Davis bounced off a tackler and made two spin moves on a 12-yard touchdown run that made it 20-0 early in the second quarter. The lead grew to 27-0 when Rosenfels rolled right, stopped just before crossing the line of scrimmage and zipped the ball between two defenders to Moses, who tipped the ball and then held on in the back of the end zone.
Iowa State contained Indiana State's option offense while building its lead. The Sycamores, held to 90 yards in the first half, finally scored on a 9-yard run by Shane Guy with 8:18 remaining.
