AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team fell to the Texas Longhorns, 0-3 Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum. Texas used double-digit kill performances from Kathy Hahn (16), Gipy Duarte (12) and Amy Hultgren (12) to drop the Cyclones to 2-19 on the season and 0-12 in conference play. The win improves UT's overall record to 6-13 and 5-7 in Big 12 action.
ISU came out strong in game one as they came back from a slight deficit to eventually take the lead. It was a seesaw battle for the remainder of the opening game, but it was Texas who was able to put a string of points together to take the first set 15-12. Unfortunately for ISU fans the Cyclones didn't fair as well in games two and three as the Longhorns worn Iowa State down to take the final to sets, 15-6 and 15-2.
"The disappointing thing tonight was that I thought Texas was a team that we should have played with a little better this season," ISU head coach Linda Grensing said. "After all the emotion we used in game one, it seemed like we were kind of worn-out and that was pretty evident in the final game."
The Cyclones were lead tonight by a strong offensive outing by junior outside hitter Nanette Allen. Allen ended the night tied foir the team lead in kills with 10, but also added one assist, one ace and five digs. Sophomore Mandi Harms tied Allen for the team lead in kills with 10 of her own, but also led the Cyclones with a .261 hitting percentage and nine digs.
Senior middle blocker Stacy Nicks led ISU defensively with her three blocks, including one solo stop. The Spencer native also tallied seven kills and two digs on the night.
The Cyclones go on the road this weekend as they face Missouri in Columbia. The ISU-MU matchup will begin at 7 p.m. in the Hearnes Center.
