AMES, Iowa (AP) - Tyray Pearson scored a career-high 21 points as Iowa State defeated Wisconsin-Milwaukee 71-61 Friday in the first round of the Tribune Cyclone Challenge.
Shane Power added 18 points and Omar Bynum and Tommie King scored 11 apiece as Iowa State (4-2) won the game at the free throw line where they were 28 of 42.
The Cyclones played without starting point guard and leading scorer Jake Sullivan, who was sidelined with a knee injury. But Iowa State never trailed after Ricky Morgan's two free throws put them ahead 52-51 with 6:15 left.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1-3) tied the game at 52 on Clay Tucker's free throw, and Iowa State moved ahead as Bynum hit three free throws.
The Panthers closed the gap to 55-54 with 4:46 remaining. Then, Iowa State capped a 9-2 run on baskets by Power and Bynum.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee led 29-27 at halftime.
Iowa State opened the second half with a seven-point run as Power and Pearson scored 17 of the Cyclones' first 20 points of the second half.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee was led by Jason Frederick with 18 points and Tucker with 16.
Iowa State will play San Jose State Saturday in the second round of the tournament. Wisconsin-Milwaukee will face Nebraska-Omaha.
