GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Iowa State volleyball team fell to Sam Houston State, 0-3 Friday night in the Phoenix Sports Center. Mandi Harms led the Cyclones offensively with 11 kills. True freshman Brittany Dalager recorded her second double-double of her career, ending the night with 10 kills and 15 digs. The loss drops ISU to 2-1 on the year, while Sam Houston State improves to 3-3.
In the opening set the Bearcats jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but the Cyclones fought back and eventually took the lead at 11-10. Iowa State would go on a 11-4 run powered by outside hitter Mandi Harms' six kills. SHS made a run of its own, tying the match once again at 28-28. They would go on and win the final two points to close out game one.
The Bearcats carried over the momentum they gained in the opening set to captured game two, 30-14. Sam Houston State, led by Suzanne Wright's four kills and 12 digs, took an 18-11 advantage. The lead would be to much for the Cyclones to over come as SHS claimed a 2-0 lead.
In game three SHS once again took a sizeable lead throughout the first half of the set. The Bearcats led 18-11, but the Cyclones fought back into the match closing the gap to two. ISU cut Sam Houston State's led even closer at 28-27. Unfortunately for the Cyclones SHS would take the final three-of-four points scored to win the match.
"I was disappointed with our play tonight as a team," ISU head coach Linda Crum said. "Our outsides were inconsistent tonight and we were unable to capitalize on several opportunities. We left the door open for Sam Houston State and they took advantage."
The Cyclones will continue action in the Amerihost Classic on Saturday at Noon vs. Wisconsin-Green Bay. ISU will finish off the round-robin tournament with a 5 p.m. matchup vs. Morehead State.
