Iowa State Gymnasts Win Home Opener Over Michigan State

AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa State gymnastics team won their 2003 home opener against the Michigan State Spartans, 196.000-193.325 after a tough loss last week at Missouri. ISU's record is now 1-1 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 Conference action.
Freshman Erin Dethloff took first place in the all-around competition scoring a 39.40, a career high, as well as the highest all-around score by a freshman in Cyclone history.
ISU's Chee Chee Calina and Laura-Kay Powell, along with
On the bars, finishing just after Dethloff, Cyclone Gabrielle Layne placed second, with a career high score of 9.85. Calina tied with MSU's Diana Crea for third place with a 9.825.
The Cyclone swept the vault with sophomore Susan Stock placing first (9.80), senior co-captain Karen Kuplicki took second with a 9.775 and Dethloff and fellow freshman Jessica Oney shared third place (9.75).
