AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team closed out the Big 12 season with a 3-0 shutout victory over Texas Tech Sunday. The Cyclones move to 7-9-1 overall and finish with a 4-6 conference mark. Texas Tech falls to 2-16 overall and 0-9 in the Big 12.
Kristina Baumann highlighted the Iowa State offense Sunday, scoring all three goals. The first came on a penalty kick in the 24th minute. Iowa State forward Amy Flores was fouled in the box and Baumann converted on the penalty kick. Later in the first half, Baumann took a cross from Arlene Samuel and converted after eluding a Red Raider defender. Samuel and Leslie Hansell assisted on the play, with Hansell collecting her first career point at ISU. Baumann completed the hat trick nine minutes into the second half after taking a long pass from Deb Benakis and beating goalkeeper Megan Knauss.
"Kristina is a tremendous goal scorer," Iowa State interim head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "She really works hard and puts in the extra time."
Baumann's three goals are the most in a game by an Iowa State player since Nicole Wilcox recorded a hat trick against Texas Tech, Oct. 26, 2001. Baumann, a freshman from Naperville, Ill., becomes the fifth different player in ISU soccer history to score three or more goals in a game. The hat trick is the tenth in Iowa State soccer history. In the Cyclones' past two games, Baumann has notched four goals and one assist.
Iowa State held the edge in shots, 21-11, the second straight game in which ISU has fired 20 or more shots. Baumann fired six shots and Nikki Gamble added four. Knauss recorded nine saves for the Red Raiders. Beth Chapman earned her second shutout of the season for Iowa State, making five saves, all in the first half.
Iowa State has scored seven goals in the past two contests, the most goals in consecutive games since the 1999 squad scored nine goals in shutouts over Western Michigan and Ball State. ISU has not scored seven goals in consecutive Big 12 games since 4-1 and 4-3 victories over Kansas and Missouri in 1997,
With a 4-6 conference record, Iowa State posts its best Big 12 mark since 1999 and is in position to qualify for the Big 12 Tournament, pending the outcome of games Sunday and Friday, Nov. 1.
"I told the team we needed to win these last two games," Hornbacher said. "We have done what we needed to do, now we have to see what happens. There are four teams battling for two spots in the tournament right now."
The Cyclones will close out the regular season with a game at home against in-state rival Iowa, Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m.
