AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team scored a 2-1 victory over Oklahoma State in the Cyclones' first home conference game of the season. ISU (4-5-1) handed the Cowgrils their first loss of the season after ten consecutive victories. The Cyclones improve to 1-2 in Big 12 play while OSU falls to 2-1.
Iowa State got on the board quickly, as sophomore Kelly Burke scored off of Deb Benakis' deflected shot three minutes into the game. The goal was the first of Buke's career. Oklahoma State answered 12 minutes later when Jere Boykin's shot from the right side hit the left post and caromed into the net. It was Boykin's team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The game remained tied until late in the second half when Iowa State was able to take control on the offensive end. After some near-misses, midfielder Nikki Gamble broke free and found Benakis for the game-winner with under three minutes to play. Gamble and Benakis hooked up for the deciding score against Northern Iowa earlier this season.
"It was great to get on the board first today," ISU interim head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "It would have been nice to monopolize on more opportunities, especially with the wind in the first half. It doesn't matter what the scoreboard says at halftime, just at the end of the game."
Hornbacher went on to recognize some key individual performances, "Lindsey Lees came off the bench to provide a spark. She realized her role and was a key in this game. Deb Benakis has also showed that she is a young leader on this team."
Sophomore goalkeeper Karen Hasselman made her first start of the season for ISU and picked up the win, recording three saves in the process.
"Both of our goalkeepers are very competitive," Hornbacher said. "I wanted to give Karen the opportunity today because she has worked very hard in practice."
Iowa State has never defeated a previously unbeaten opponent with as many wins as the Cowgirls' ten. ISU has defeated only one other opponent with at least ten wins, topping 10-4 Westmar 3-0 on Oct. 19, 1997.
The Cyclones continue Big 12 play at home against Oklahoma, Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m.
