AMES, Iowa (AP) - Jackson Vroman scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in his Iowa State debut and Marcus Jefferson added 16 points as the Cyclones beat Division III Coe 87-65 on Monday night.
At 6-feet-10, Vroman was 4 inches taller than any Coe player and took advantage of that edge. The transfer from Snow Junior College made 10-of-15 shots in the opener for both teams, mostly lay-ups and dunks.
Jake Sullivan and Tim Barnes each scored 11 points for Iowa State and Barnes, also a junior college transfer, had nine assists. Jared Homan and freshman Adam Haluska scored 10 apiece for the Cyclones.
Brandon Sain made five 3-point baskets and scored 26 points to lead Coe, which was playing Iowa State for the first time since 1948. The Kohawks hit 13 3-pointers to keep from getting blown out after Iowa State opened a 31-point lead early in the second half.
Vroman had four straight baskets, three on assists from Barnes, during a 17-0 run that gave Iowa State a 24-4 lead. The Cyclones made 8-of-9 shots during that burst, Vroman rebounding the only miss and scoring on a putback.
At one point in the first half, Vroman had as many points (16) as Coe did as a team and had two more field goals than the Kohawks.
Jefferson scored seven points as Iowa State started the second half with a 12-0 run to stretch its lead to 62-31. The Cyclones led by 31 twice after that but could not shake the Kohawks, who made four 3s during a 4-minute stretch to keep it respectable.
