Iowa State Volleyball Dominates Drake, 3-0

AMES, Iowa ? Sophomore Ashlie McWee had 11 kills and hit a career-high .647 from the floor and junior Brittany Dalager had 14 digs to lead Iowa State to a 3-0 win over Drake, Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum. With the win, Iowa State's record improves to 10-9 on the season. Stacy Boerema led Drake with 13 kills and six digs. Drake falls to 8-11 on the season. It is the third consecutive win over Drake for the Cyclones.

Iowa State dominated the match offensively and defensively, hitting .235 from the floor and collecting 47 digs. ISU committed just 21 hitting errors on 115 attacks. The Cyclones held the Bulldogs to .048 from the floor. ISU also held the block advantage with 22 total blocks to Drake's 20.

ISU's Renae Pruess drilled eight kills and senior Dana Koziol had 12 digs to help the Cyclone cause on the evening. Senior Michelle Gannon had five kills and five block assists on the night, both career highs. Freshman Nicole Lorenzen added six kills and two digs.

“We had a lot of people play tonight, a lot of different people and they stepped up and did a very nice job,” head coach Linda Crum said. “Michelle (Gannon) came in and did very well for us up front. Katy (Amundson) came in and had a solid match for us as well as Christine (Smeele). They've worked very hard and did a nice job for us tonight.”

Iowa State had the advantage in game one, hitting .250 from the floor, compared to the Bulldogs' .140. ISU had 118 kills and only seven hitting errors, while holding Drake to 13 kills. The Cyclones won a tight game one, 31-29.

In game two, Iowa State again had a solid hitting game. They hit .175 from the floor, while holding the Bulldogs to .025. The Cyclones pounded 16 kills on 40 attacks and forced 10 Drake errors to win game two, 30-26. The teams headed into the locker-room with the Cyclones up, 2-0.

Game three was all Iowa State as the Cyclones pounded 14 kills and had just five hitting errors and hit a sizzling .290 from the floor. Drake had just 11 kills and hit only .024 from the floor. Iowa State won game three decisively, 30-20, and the match, 3-0.

“I was very pleased with our play tonight,” Crum said. “We had a goal to beat Drake in three and we did that. I thought we were aggressive in all aspects of our match tonight. Ashlie (McWee) had a great match for us with no hitting errors. I'm proud of what the kids did tonight. It gives us a lot of confidence going into the match against Kansas on Friday night.”

Iowa State will travel to Lawrence, Kan., to take on the Kansas Jayhawks on Friday, Oct. 17, starting at 7 p.m.
