LINCOLN, Neb. - Despite holding Nebraska to 36 percent shooting, Iowa State fell 62-57 on the road in its Big 12 opener. The Cyclones (7-5, 0-1) managed just 22 points, converting 8-of-27 field goals, in the second half after holding a 35-34 edge at the half. The Huskers (11-2, 1-0) move to 8-0 at home this season and end a 10-game losing streak in the series with Iowa State.
Lisa Kriener scored eight points in the first five minutes of the game, helping Iowa State to a 13-3 lead. The Cyclones built the lead to 12 with 10 minutes remaining in the half before Nebraska reeled off 11 points in a row on the strength of back-to-back 3-pointers by Kiera Hardy. Nebraska never led in the first half, and ISU led by one at the break. Kriener paced Iowa State with 12 first-half points.
Nebraska quickly grabbed a 36-35 lead on a basket by Katie Morse in the first minute of the second half, and Iowa State never led the rest of the way. The Cyclones scored their first points of the half on a basket by Kriener with 14 minutes to play. ISU missed seven shots and committed five turnovers in the first six minutes of the second half.
Iowa State tied the game at 51 with under six minutes to play on a free throw by Anne O'Neil. A second O'Neil free throw attempt was no good, the Cyclones' only miss from the line on the night. ISU grabbed two offensive rebounds on the same possession but missed two jumpers to take the lead. The Huskers scored six straight to take a 57-51 lead with three minutes left. Iowa State closed the margin to two points twice in the final minute, but Nebraska converted five of its final six free throw attempts to seal the victory.
Iowa State managed just three assists in the second half while committing 13 turnovers. The two teams combined to shoot 1-for-17 from beyond the arc in the second half.
ISU finished with a 41-39 edge in rebounds. Mary Fox grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds, and Brittany Wilkins pulled down 12 boards while scoring 10 points for her second double-double of the season. O'Neil posted a game-high 18 points on 8-of-20 shooting. Kriener finished with 16 points, including a career-best 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Kea Cannon scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Nebraska.
