AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State gymnastics team won their 2004 home opner agasint the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 196.925-196.275. This marks the Cyclones' first victory over the Huskers in a dual meet since 1997. It also marks the seventh-highest team score in school history. ISU outscored Nebraska in eveyr event in front of a record high crowd of 2716 fans. ISU's record improves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 Conference action.
Head coach K.J. Kindler said, "Tonight marks a milestone for our program. The girls walked in expecting to win. Everyone stepped up when little mistakes were made an I think that says a lot about our team and what we are able to do."
Iowa State's vault socre of 49.25 marks the third highest in school history. A trio of ISU sophomores, Erin Dethloff, Laura-Kay Powell and Jessica Oney, shared fourth place along with Nebraska's Stephanie Carter (9.85). Husker Libby Landgraf took thrid place in the event with a 9.875. Cyclone freshman Janet Anson claimed second-place honors (9.90). Nebraska's Richelle Simpson grabbed first place with a 9.95.
Anson and Simpson tied for first-place honors on bars (9.85). Anson matched her career high in the event. Husker Tami Harris came in third place with a 9.825 and Iowa State's Chee Chee Calina and Krystal Carney shared fourth place (9.80).
Dethloff took first-place honors on the floor with a 9.925. Behind her in a two-way tie for second were Cyclone teammates Anson and Carney (9.90). Anson and Carney's scores matched their personal bests in the event. Powell shared fourth place with Harris, 9.875. ISU notched their sixth-highest floor score in school history with a 49.45.
Iowa State swept the all-around competition with Anson in first with 39.475, Dethloff in second with a 39.425 and Powell in third with a 39.375.
"Having a few wins on the road really boosted our confidence tonight," commented Dethloff. "We've been preparing and we knew we could do it."
The undefeated Cyclones next travel to No. 21 Oklahoma on Sun., Feb. 1, at 2 p.m. at Lloyd Noble Center.
