AMES, Iowa -- The No. 5 ISU gymnasts notched another victory against the No. 25 Pioneers at Hilton Coliseum Friday night (196.350-195.475). Their record improves to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big 12 Conference.
Iowa State began the night on vault. Freshman Janet Anson took first-place honors in the event with a 9.90. There was a two-way tie for second between Dethloff and Denver's Heather Huffaker, 9.85. ISU's Laura-Kay Powell shared fourth place with Pioneer Casey Dobyns.
On bars, Dethloff took first-place honors (9.875). Teammate Katie Lasher followed her in second with a score of 9.85. In third was Ashley Shible of Denver (9.825). After the second rotation, the Cyclones were tied with the Pioneers with team totals of 97.575.
Head coach K.J. Kindler said, "After our weak performance on bars, this team showed great chemistry; they came back aggressive and didn't hold back on beam. As a team we saw our best routines on beam tonight."
Iowa State came back on beam with a team score of 49.35 on beam. ISU swept the beam with Powell in first with a career-high score of 9.925. Dethloff claimed second with 9.00 and senior Chee Chee Calina took third with 9.875.
Dethloff said, "After making a few mistakes on bars, we knew we had to stay confident for beam and we did. We had a really strong performance in the event."
The Cyclones swept the floor competitions as well. Dethloff received first-place honors when she matched her career-high score of 9.95. Placing in a three-way tie for second was Krystal Carney, Janet Anson, and Powell (9.875).
Dethloff scored a season-high 39.575 to win the all-around competition for the second week in a row. Powell claimed second with a 39.350. In third was Shible (39.275).
The Cyclones will next travel to Illinois to take on the Fighting Illini on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.
